Growing up, I was the quintessential nerd: Devoured issues of National Geographic and dreamt of becoming a travel photographer, archaeologist or war photographer. Not surprising that I ended up with a career that is distinctly nerdy, a fiber-optic engineer, but didn’t quite match the dreams. For 12 years, I would escape my day-job by being a keen hobbyist photographer.
Fast forward to the moment my sister asked me to shoot her wedding. Soon I started getting more requests for paid wedding work and having some lightbulb realizations. Along the way, I met my incredible wife, Abigail, who also shot weddings but was far better than me (still is, hi honey!). We launched our cobranded wedding photography business, Abby + Dave. We quickly has a thriving six-figure business that allowed me to leave the confines of my lackluster engineering career.
That business has sustained us, gave us a community of like-minded creative friends, and truly guided us into our next careers.
Sometimes you learn the most important things about yourself when you weren’t looking. I’ve been an engineer, photographer, entrepreneur, and educator. But the moniker coach taps into the deepest essence of who I am as a human being. Everything I did before becoming a coach led me to this moment of helping others flourish and find themselves.
My journies before this all showed me that teaching creatives how to build better businesses and uncover their inner strengths is my calling. Marketing, systems, limiting beliefs, the numbers side of businesses, and helping you find joy in what you do. It’s my dream job!

On my first day of kindergarten, I told my mom I wanted to be a teacher. The wisdom of that moment has never left me. Life might have had different plans, but I’ve always known that teaching was my truest calling and how I want to contribute to the world.
Since leaving my home state of Michigan in 2009, I taught high school in my new home, Maui, for four years while doing photography on nights and weekends. In 2014, I left the classroom to become a full-time photographer.
In the last six years, I have launched two successful brands: Engaged on Maui, a service that helps couples plan and document their proposals, and Angela Nelson Photography, my Maui wedding photography business. Since then I’ve grown to have four photographers, an office manager, and an in-house photo editor. All this with a toddler at home and a newborn.
As a destination wedding photographer in one of the most iconic and beautiful places on earth, the only way my clients find me is online. Building a brand identity that showcases my talents has been a labor of love. My website, Instagram, and online presence have been honed and toned over the past six years.

If you want to level up as a creative business owner, this course for you.I’ve been a photographer for over 10 years now in the Pacific Northwest, and in my area it’s very hard to stand out because there are so many talented people around me. They labeled the second chapter the boring part… But truthfully… We all need this. The PDF that comes along with the section about financials is so important for your business.
